Hello everyone. Well! I must say what a year for ATADesigns...... Lots of new things happening, and nice little projects coming your way soon. We are still working on our new online store and hope to get it finished, fresh for the New Year. I can't wait...... it's looking good. ATADesigns & The Wallpaper Mural Company Team-up for The National Home Improvement Show, Earls Court, Sept 2011

ATADesigns and The Wallpaper Mural Co. Stand

It was a pleasure exhibiting with The Wallpaper Mural Co at The National Home Improvement Show, Earls Court, Sept 28th - 30th Sept 2011. Our first Consumer Show. There were lots of interesting finds for homebuilding, definitely the place to be for great tips and ideas, especially from experts such as TV Presenter, Interior Designer and Writer, Julia Kendall explaining the benefits of digitally printed wallpapers.

It was also great to be selected to exhibit in Julia Kendall's Pavilion, a new section for the show. My "partner in crime" during the exhibition was Mark Forrest (Director) of The Wallpaper Mural Co. We had only ever spoken on the phone, so it was lovely to work with him. "What a nice man"

Our stand featured exciting new products such as:

A Collins Bartholomew London Contemporary Street Map printed onto 5D canvas and Vintage Map by Mapseeker making a stunning 10mm acrylic wall piece. These are in collaboration with the The Wallpaper Mural Co, and can also be printed as wallpaper. You can see more details on The Wallpaper Mural Co website.
There were various wallpapers by myself (ATADesigns) including snippets from our new Art Deco Murals range due to be sold on our new online store coming soon. I just can't wait to show you the site, there will be great things and new works to share.
A Manchester themed mural was featured on the back wall. A collaboration mural project between myself and Gareth Wyn-Jones (Design Director/Photographer of The Wallpaper Mural Co). The mural was printed onto a new system called SwitchScene(TM) by The Wallpaper Mural Company. I was amazed at how easy it was to install on the stand without having to glue the paper to the wall. This was heaven! Amazing stuff! Perfect for exhibition stands, windows etc.

Urban London Collection at 100 Percent Design 2011, Earls Court, London

Well... On the 22nd - 25th September 2011 the London Design Festival, Urban London Collaboration project was launched at 100% Design, Earls Court.

It was really nice to see some faces old and new exhibiting at the show. Which, for me is both a huge adrenalin boost and a good time to catch-up. It can be quite stressful getting products ready before the show, especially as things don't always go according to plan. But, even with all of this, I always look forward to the event.

Whether I'm exhibiting or just visiting, there's so much creativity and talent to see around various parts of London. There's happening pop-up shops, Tent London at the Old Truman Brewery, East London, Designers Block at the Fariloe building, Clerkenwell, The Craft Central designer sale, Clerkenwell, The AACDD at the Bargehouse, Oxo Tower, South Bank, The Victoria and Albert museum, and much more, and of course 100% Design at Earls Court. As an exhibitor, you don't always get to see much else, but as a visitor, London is your oyster.

Adrienne Chinn, a very talented Interior Designer had put together The Urban London project (Urban London by Adrienne Chinn) a unique collection of interior products working in collaboration with selected designers like Sue King (glass designer), including myself ATADesigns (we worked together and designed the wallpapers, murals, fabrics and cushions) - I was bowled over to meet the students from St.Paul's Way Trust School, Omar Cham designed (London Eye Chair), Abdul Tahir (Foot Stool) and colleagues Tonny Duong, and Maruf Ahmed who, through a project had been able to realise their designs with Adrienne's knowledge. It was amazing to see their reaction to the finished products - huge smiles all round I think. Adrienne also displayed her hidden talent and designed her own range of rugs and tiebacks.

We decorated the walls with our huge gritty urban style mural panels, I must say hanging the paper was very easy (paste to wall), we then furnishing the stand with newly designed contemporary furniture, rugs, tiebacks and art glass pieces. It was really exciting to see everything come together.

Collaboration Murals by ATADesigns & Adrienne Chinn Wins Design Award

Well, Friday 16th September was truly a night to remember at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel, Hyde Park. Collaboration murals by ATADesigns and Adrienne Chinn Design won The International Design and Architecture Award 2011 for best wallpaper design. A lovely evening hosted by Design et al magazine.

The event was well attended by some of industry's top design companies, so it was an honor to be among this crowd, I'm still buzzing with excitement.

During the evening I was in great company and I would like to say hello to: Dextene McIntosh of Komfortzone, Tom Phillips and Tim Newsome of Increation, Paula Sousa of Munna Design, Miles Hartwell of Splinter Works, Alan West and Callum Graham of Trombe, and Jenny Skeate and Olivia Mudie of Bespoke.

I would like to thank Design et al for a wonderful evening, also Adrienne Chinn a great interior designer for the fruits of our collaboration, and for everyone who voted for us. I collected the award on both our behalf, we make a great team! Look out for children's wallpaper in the pipeline.

Print & Design Now 2011 Exhibition 28 Jul - 23rd Aug 2011

Well! Thursday evening on 28th July 2011, I toodled off down to Victoria, London to the SW1 Gallery which is where my work and other very talented artists and designers work is shown at PRINT & DESIGN NOW! 2011 Exhibition. I must say that I was impressed with such a huge gallery, it's modern, contemporary and spacious with fantastic light, and positioned in a prime location with lots of eating places, and bars, what more could you want of an evening. The preview night was a lovely evening, buzzing with excitement, and flowing wine. It was great mingling with the other artists, and seeing such a vast variety of art on show. I'm proud to be part of this show and look forward to doing the next one.

I would like to thank Bearspace and the Judges for selecting my work among so many other professional artists works, and for both Bearspace and SW1 Gallery for presenting a wonderful evening.

Lupe Velazquez owner of Occenca is a product and furniture designer. I found out about this fabulous "Pilot Chair" two days ago that I have to share it with you on my blog.

Karen Davies started off as a self taught artist and then later on completed a higher national diploma in fine art at Reading College & School of Art and Design (now part of Thames Valley University). Karen's work is very rich in colour, and I love her subject matter, my favorite piece is "Cows in Dorset" an amazing painting. Karen says

"It’s printed on Hahnemuhle Bamboo paper 290gsm approx A3 size. The giclee is a print of a oil painting (painted on mdf board actually!) which I did in 2009 after a holiday in Beaminster, Dorset. These inquisitive cows were in the field next to our holiday cottage. First 8 prints of an open edition – available for sale on Folksy on the web"

Following its fantastic debut at the London Art Fair last year, BEARSPACE & SW1 Gallery are excited to announce Print & Design Now! 2011, a pioneering open-submission exhibition set to feature over 200 works by emerging artists and designers who specialise in the mediums of print and design.

Artworks have been selected by a panel of arts professionals ensuring the very best quality of work on show. These include, Julia Alvarez, Alice Stack, Director of the Own Art Scheme at Arts Council England.

This exhibition will showcase the very best in contemporary art and design at prices that are affordable to the younger collector and great artists from all over the country. Take this opportunity to invest in artists of the future as selected by some of the UK’s most distinguished authorities on art and design.

Prices range from £25 - £1000 for edition prints and one off works. All works will also be available on the BEARSPACE website, catalogue section, launched on the 28th July!

This exhibition is presented in partnership with Land Securities and the Arts Council England’s Own Art scheme, which provides interest free loans of up to £2,000 for buyers of contemporary art.

Pop-Up Shop Success by ATADesigns

For the second year running, for one week only, we opened-up our own pop-up shop, in association with Craft Central at Clerkenwell, London, which was very successful, and despite the heavy rain at times, it was nice to see that people still came in and enjoyed what we had to offer. We launched our new designer mugs with matching side plates, our new Art Deco murals, and A3 prints, and finally our new handmade "Squiggle" wall tiles. These are just a taster of what we have to offer.

I'd like to say a special thank you to all of you who came and bought our products. Even those of you who wanted to just meet us, or even browsed to see what we had to offer. Thank you to the friends who came, and to Pete for the delicious boiled sweets with lots of yummy flavours (I liked the red ones best).

A really big big thank you to the Petes and Phil who helped us with transporting our products to and from the shop.

All products will be available to order from our new Online Shop coming very soon. I'll keep you informed of this, but in the meantime, you can contact me direct if you are interested or want to discuss anything.

It's been a long time since our last blog.... and we apologies for that. We always like to keep you up-to-date with all the exciting things we are doing.

Our time away from blogging has been spent creatively doing busy things, including developing new products to launch. We are also close to meeting our deadline for the new online shop coming very soon, and if I must say, it looks pretty darn good, so hang on in there, and thank you for your patience.

Urban Upholstery Collaboration Event Private View

With Snow underfoot and treading carefully we took ourselves and some delicious homemade cheesy chive-y scones along Kingsland Road towards Urban Upholstery for their 2^nd annual private view party, this time a collaboration with 6 other artistic minds.

When we arrived there was quite a spread as each of the featured creatives had brought along something tasty to eat, Party On!

Katja Behre’s (Elli Popp): Wallpapers, Cushions, Chinaware and more

Dawn Summers (Woosa Woosa): With her amazing luxuriant colourful rug designs

Laura Hamilton (Bird in the Hand): Caribbean themed Fabrics and Bags

Susan Laughton and Ian Turnock (Second Nature): Abstract Metallic sculptural creations

Then there were my (ATADesigns) Art Deco Wallpapers 'La reunion des Hommes' and 'Elegant' as well as contemporary Cushions and a new line of designer mugs due to be sold online in 2011.

And of course Patrizia and Andrea’s (Urban Upholstery) fabulous furniture, including the pieces on which at least some of us had collaborated.

Anthony Ferguson (Niko B chocolates): Brought along his tasty homemade organic chocolates of many different types… including Chocolate Soup (with just a lttle Rum Mmmm!) and Chocolate boxes (Boxes made out of… yes you guessed it, scrumdidli-umptious chocolate, Yum!). I couldn't resist and had to buy some of these gorgeous chocs for your journey home.

“Experimenter En Couleur” (Alexis Bamforth) provided the soundtrack with his ambient mixes, in part created on the spot, from the sounds of some of Urban Upholstery’s own Tools and Equipment. I also bought one of Alexis's albums and can't wait to play it.

Some very tasty authentic fare from the Liguria area of Italy was provided by Andrea’s Mum Attilia, a lovely lady, and although she didn’t speak much English, and I spoke no Italian, we still managed to communicate when Patrizia and Andrea weren’t available to translate.

Although there was a serious chill in the evening air, the eclectic, lively, convivial and chatty international company provided the final ingredient for a satisfyingly warm evening.

My only regret is that the photos I had taken of everyone didn't come out too well, the images were too dark. I think I need to invest in a new camera.

Thank you to all the guests who braved the cold to come along to the private view.

Well, I'm now back from my amazing visit to Brazil, and seeing the CASA COR Exhibition, and I can't wait to tell you more..... All will be revealed in my next blog.

In the meantime, I'm now preparing for my next event with Urban Upholstery which is drawing very close. This is a collaboration event, working with six other very talented designers of different disciplines. You will also get a chance to see our new Art Deco collection including "La reunion des hommes", and our "Elegant" wallpaper on show.

Unfortunately, our new collection is not currently on our website as yet, we are working on a new site to launch by the end of this year, so for those of you who have been patiently waiting, we apologies.

I didn't really study Art Deco design while at university, and although I knew a little about it, researching and exploring it now has added another design element to my bow. Creating these new designs has been challenging, and has taken me out of my comfort zone which is usually more towards graphic design. So why have I decided to move out of my comfort zone? well the real reason is that I have been receiving enquiries for Art Deco wallcoverings, so I thought that I would face the challenge and do something about it. I now have a collection which is due to be on my new website soon by the end of September 2010. If you are interested in seeing the collection, please contact me, and I will send you a pdf brochure.

Last month I was invited to Shoreham Airport Art Deco Fair, and as well as loving all the Art Deco furniture and various other collections, these fantastic Aeroplanes took my breath away, so I thought I'd share them with you. Amazing!

Today is sadly my last day at the Pop-up shop. This has been a great experience, one that I would gladly repeat again. A taster of owning my own shop even though it's only for one week, and actually finding out customers needs, what kind of things are they looking for in the home. Something different from the high street shops is what I have discovered. I have met some really nice people, that have been positive and enthusiastic about my work, and have kindly given me good advice. I have even had encouraging comments from one or two Craft Central members who rent studios near the shop. I'm pleased to say that all my hard work has been paid off and I have achieved my goal for this week in sales and expectations. A really positive experience, and this has given me some pointers when planning future work.

It was also nice to see some friends, including my old friend Maria Pakeel and her sister Pat, both very talented designer/makers, Michele Berry of Embi and Patrizia Sottile of Urban Upholstery.

I would like to say thank you to those who visited the shop, and to my husband Pete for putting-up with me and the stress of putting everything together.

Well, a week in the Pop-up shop world is almost over, just two more days left (Saturday and Sunday) to go, and I have enjoyed every minute of it. It's such a great way to test the market with your products. The shop is doing very well indeed, so if you haven't visited as yet, and you have some free time, why not come over and see what we have to offer. You may miss out on some goodies. I spoke to one customer today who missed her chance of buying a couple of mugs that she saw at the beginning of the week, but she was still able to buy the last two mugs this afternoon, so now I am sold out. Annette Taylor-Anderson’s design entitled “Primrose Hill” is selected as runner-up for “The Outer Limits – beyond zone one” Poster Competition by TFL

I am pleased to announce that my design “Primrose Hill – A View from a Hill” entered for “The Outer Limits” poster competition by TFL has been selected among other artists as runner-up.

I’ve always wanted to design something for TFL and producing this design gave me the opportunity, an opportunity I really enjoyed.

As a designer, many people know me for my graphic work, and not familiar with my drawings. I make a point to draw everyday in my sketchbook to keep my skills up-to-date. More designs or other projects will be revealed at a later date.

I found the brief challenging, and I wasn’t quite sure what kind of design, or what area I wanted to focus on. One Saturday, I was on a mission to research, and visit certain areas/boroughs that appealed to me. I found myself in Camden, taking lots of photos, and then as it was such a lovely day, I walked to Primrose Hill. I sat on the hill taking in the beautiful sunshine, and watching people relaxing, chatting and walking their dogs. I then started to sketch as usual, and turned it into my poster idea. I would like to thank all the judges and TFL for selecting my design.

Ria Dastidar (AKA Uberpup) featured in Computer Arts Magazine

Ria Dastidar (AKA Uberpup), Freelance designer/illustrator has been very busy producing new and exciting works. She is currently being featured in Computer Arts magazine, in the Graduate Showcase 2009 section as one of this year’s best new design talent. Her work is so cool that you have to take a look at her website. I first met Ria on a business course run by Cockpit Arts, and she introduced me to Uberbpup, a cartoon character she created and developed not just on paper, but also a small toy. This year she was commissioned by British Airways to produce Uberpup artwork for the British Airways children’s lounges at Heathrow. Ria continues to develop Uberpup and other great and wonderful graphic designs. If you like talent spotting, she is definitely one to watch.
You may have already seen Ria’s design for the Big Chill festival at various tube stations.

“New York Reflections” inspired by the Motion and Emotion of New York.

Last year, I went to New York and had a great time. I was exhibiting at ICFF (International Contemporary Furniture Fair), travelling with the BEDG (British European Design Group)

It was my first time to New York, and it was like stepping onto a film set, everything looked so familiar with big yellow taxis, yellow school buses and of course giant buildings, and traffic lights. I suppose watching all those American films helped with the familiarity. I loved the fact that everything is so big, so I had to record everything on my camera – new inspirations for new work. One of my favorite places was Grand Central Station, a huge place and certainly Grand. The famous four-sided clock is featured in my designs, along with other finds. I feel that I have only just touched on New York and that there is a lot more to see, which will mean lots more images and inspirations – I will surely visit again soon, can’t wait!

For those of you who managed to visit Craft Central last week, thank you for taking the time and I hope that you enjoyed viewing my new work entitled “New York Reflections”. The work was up in the Craft Central window space for one week only, so some of you may not have been able to make it.

Some of you Architects and Designers out there have been asking if our wallcoverings are available on vinyl for commercial purposes. I would like to announce that we can now supply our designs on vinyl. The Goat in Boot Pub, Chelsea features the “Cranes” design printed on Paper Backed Smooth Vinyl.

We have two types of Vinyl:

Paper Backed Vinyl (smooth)
Digmura Fabric Backed Vinyl (Canvas)

When I first saw these new shower curtain designs, I fell in love with them. Kaniez Abdi and Kontextur founder, Kenneth Schiller, worked closely together to develop this first line of modern and cutting-edge textiles. According to Schiller, "With this launch we wanted to push, or actually, shove the boundaries of the shower curtain without ignoring functionality, usability and marketability as we look ahead to the transition from concept to production".

As seen in Milan, freelance textile consultant Kaniez Abdi showcased her cutting-edge fabrics at Salone Satellite with Hidden Art during the Milan Furniture Fair.

These beautiful fabric designs: The first called "Spiral" made from nylon fibre and machine embroidered into a spiral formation giving a lace like quality. The second called "Tarnished fabric" made from distressed sequins and machine embroidered. Are part of her made to order fabric collection bringing together the fusion of hand craft textile techniques such as machine and hand embroidery, heat bonding, trapping, cutting, paining, layering and pleating making each fabric distinctive for the interior market.

Kaniez is currently collaborating with a company called Kontextur who makes cutting-edge curtain rings. She is working on their first collection of shower curtain designs that will be launched at ICFF in New York in May 2009.

Best of British Design Open Call - Register now for Autumn

Liberty is now calling for the next stint of designers to show their product in front of a panel.

I dragged myself out of bed on Saturday 25th April to queue-up really early for this event. I met-up with some friends and I must say that it was a great and exciting experience. Yes it did rain a little on the day, but that didn't matter. The queue went all the way around Liberty, so if you are planning to go to the Autumn Open Call, then I would suggest that you arrive early. The doors opened at 10am, I arrived at 8am, and there were around 30 people in the queue.

I had some really good feedback about my product (wallpapers), and now I am waiting to hear whether my product has been accepted. It was quite a relaxed day, I presented my work in front of two people (a Buyer and Journalist), and it was not as scary as I'd thought.

If you are a budding new British designer and would like to have your products sold at Liberty. The next Open Call will be held in Autumn, to register your interest send an email to autumnopencall@liberty.co.uk

It is best to register as soon as you can to avoid disappointment.

The Natural & Organic Products Europe show started today at Olympia. I found the show calm and refreshing with lots of new tasty nutritional foods to try. I was offered a health drink made from green grass which looked odd, but tasted nice, I'll try anything!

Why was I at the show? well, I was invited by Wuchi by Maks, London, who selected our new "Emperor" wallpaper from the Regal range to decorate their stand. This is the second time, that I have been working with Wuchi by Maks, and it's always a pleasure working with them. Last year I was commissioned by Amaka Olateju founder of "Wuchi by Maks of London" to design a wallpaper for her stand at both the "Vitality" show and the "National Organic" show, Olympia, London. I gave their Frankincense & Advocado Moisture Lotion a try, and I have to say it's really good stuff!

Wuchi's Natural & Organic skincare products are made for men, women and children, so something for everyone.

... But not for animals though... Obviously.

Annette Taylor-Anderson at Maison et Objet, Paris

Hello! or should I say, Bonjour…. Vous parlez-anglais?

I asked this question throughout my time at Maison et Objet, how many times???

I do love to try and speak French when I am in France, and I feel that I’m getting better all the time.

Well, Maison et Objet, as always is a great exhibition, but this year was even more interesting than usual…

First I missed my Eurostar train going to Paris…OH NO! PANIC and ended up paying an extra £59.00 to travel on the same day….which wasn’t too bad in the end as Eurostar initially quoted that I would have to pay an extra £179.00. I nearly fell off my chair with shock.

Later my laptop went a bit crazy in France, it kept crashing every time I tried to log on to the internet – in the end I couldn’t use it at all so I went to the apple shop near the Pompidou Centre who half sorted out the problem – but at least I could use the laptop again, but without the internet.

Then I was frustrated when using the internet café, as I forgot that the French keyboard has a different layout to the English one – WHERE’S THE “A” ???? Arghhhhh

My first day at the show – the Hall I was exhibiting in was evacuated and closed down due to bad weather (too much wind?????) My hall was actually a marquee and was declared unsafe for the day, lights just kept swinging like pendulums from the gantrys that hung from our “Tent’s” roof, and some of the spotlights actually fell to the ground, though luckily no one was hurt.

The rest of the week was great though! Catching-up with some old friends and fellow designers like Yvonne and Becky Drury of Missprint, Claire Requa and David of Accent, Katja Behre of Ellipopp, Brendan and Rachel of Rachel O'Neill Designs, and Ellie Bishop of Vitamin, also seeing some suppliers, and receiving lots of lovely new contacts etc.

I’m pleased that the new Regal design collections were received well. The style is very different from the contemporary graphic style work I’m recognised for.

“Urban Coffee” One of Tooting Broadway’s (not so) hidden gems

If you want coffee (and I often do), a warm atmosphere with friendly faces, you won’t go wrong here.

These boys know their stuff, supporting Fair Trade through the drinks they whip up from ‘Dirty’ Coffees (Macchiato’s) to the more traditional Cappuccinos, Teas and Smoothies.

They also do food homemade from the freshest ingredients new each day, from their simple but filling tasty sandwiches to a wide range of delicious dishes, including all day breakfast, and all at reasonable prices.

I love cakes, and my personal favorite is the delicious, yummy chocolate cake mmmmmmm.

If you need a relaxed space to wind down in, you could do far worse than this. Also they ain’t no chain, which ain’t no bad thing.
